Naples Man Arrested in Alleged Mortgage Fraud Scheme

Tallahassee, Fla. – The Florida Office of Financial Regulation today announced that Ben A. Handa was arrested, and charged with fraudulently obtaining a mortgage loan, communications fraud and defrauding a financial institution for his alleged role in a mortgage fraud scam.

Commissioner Drew J. Breakspear said, “The Florida Office of Financial Regulation is committed to working with our partners to bring financial criminals to justice. We will continue to protect Floridians from financial crime and ensure the financial marketplace is safe to do business.”

Through his company, Green Capital Holdings, Handa is alleged to have forged and filed a quitclaim deed, fraudulently giving him ownership of a single-family home. Then, he purportedly obtained two mortgages against the property, representing in his loan application that the property was generating rental income from a lease to his company. It is alleged that Handa used the mortgage loan proceeds for his personal expenses.

The Florida Office of Financial Regulation appreciates the assistance of the Collier County Sheriff’s Office. The Collier County State Attorney’s Office is prosecuting the case.
